One Planet Summit needs to boost EU climate action

Climate action| Financing the transition

The One Planet Summit, organized by French President Emmanuel Macron and taking place in Paris, France on 12 December will gather over 50 heads of state to celebrate the second year anniversary of the Paris Agreement and trigger new ambitious climate action [1].

The One Planet Summit is the first in a series of high-level events within the so-called Talanoa Dialogue – a process which should help countries increase their 2030 climate pledges following the next UN Climate Summit in 2018. According to UN Environment, the current commitments will only bring a third of what is needed to avoid worst impacts of climate change [2].

President Macron and other EU leaders need to make the most use of this opportunity by calling upon the EU to get ready for raising its 2030 climate targetWendel Trio, Director, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe said. President Macron can prove his alleged climate leadership by pushing the whole EU to bridge the gap between its commitment and the requirements of climate science. The summit needs to pave the way for stepping up and committing the EU to a higher climate target.
